Bleeding Cool post an update on the recent Benedict Cumberbatch rumour that corroborates some information that we’ve been sitting on for a few days here at Jedi News.
Rumours bubbled up last week regarding the potential appearance of Benedict Cumberbatch in a J.J. Abrams project. While we understand that Cumberbatch and Abrams met several times, there’s no confirmation that it was specifically for Star Wars, and it’s worth remembering that Abrams has a number of other projects on the go including the role of producer on 2016’s third Star Trek.
Now Bleeding Cool, via Badass Digest and Screencrush, seem to think that Cumberbatch will appear in all three films in the role of a sith. Apart from the obvious fact that he would make a great villain, which he has already done in an Abrams space epic, and could easily play a descendant of Sir Christopher Lee’s Count Dooku, it also jibes with whispers that we’ve heard here at the site that armoured sith lords will return in the trilogy.
Here’s an interesting observation from Bleeding Cool.
There have apparently been official denials of Cumberbatch’s involvement but without seeing how they were worded I don’t know how much stock we should put in them. For example, if Lucasfilm say he hasn’t signed on, that’s irrelevant and a game with semantics. Aren’t we all suppose already that the deal is still being forged, and that’s why the announcement hasn’t happened? And besides, if the denial comes from Bad Robot you might as well ignore it no matter what it says. JJ Abrams denied the truth about which role Cumberbatch was playing in Star Trek right until the end.
Perhaps the most encouraging thing about Film Chronicles’ story is that they published it today while the gossip has been going on behind the scenes of the blogosphere for something like a week, maybe more. Has there been some movement that’s yet to trickle through to everyone? Is the official announcement getting closer? You can rest assured that as soon as the flag drops – if the flag drops – we’ll tell you about it.
As ever stay tuned for more news and please remember it’s not confirmed until Lucasfilm say so.
