Rancho Obi-Wan: The Book That Started It All

The Rancho Obi-Wan website looks back to October 1992, when Steve Sansweet published the groundbreaking Star Wars: From Concept to Screen to Collectible through Chronicle Books, exploring the toys, memorabilia, and behind-the-scenes history of Star Wars.

Steve Sansweet’s first Star Wars book marked the beginning of a remarkable body of work that would eventually include sixteen Star Wars titles written or co-written by him.

The book offered fans something extraordinary. It featured rare images from the Kenner archives, never-produced toy concepts, and fascinating details about how Star Wars became a merchandising phenomenon.

Its influence extended beyond the collecting community. The book’s distinctive design, featuring a striking gold Darth Vader cover, earned recognition in Graphis Book Design 1 in 1995. In 1999, the Los Angeles Times cited Steve’s work as a “useful” reference in its examination of how Star Wars transformed Hollywood merchandising.

In a 2000 review, pioneering collector Gus Lopez reflected on its influence: “When this book was released in 1992, it shook the Star Wars collecting world and still remains timeless today.”

Now, 34 years after its publication, we look back at the book that helped shape modern Star Wars collecting. Today, that passion for preserving and sharing the stories behind collectibles lives on at Rancho Obi-Wan.

Revisit the Story Behind the Book

In 2016, The Star Wars Collectors Archive Podcast (The Chive Cast) sat down with Steve for an in-depth look at how From Concept to Screen to Collectible came together. The conversation offers a fascinating firsthand account of the research, discoveries, and stories behind a book that helped shape Star Wars collecting.

A decade later, we’re revisiting that interview to share the story with a new generation of fans and collectors.
