Pit Droids is puzzle and problem solving game. It was released by Lucas Learning back in 1999, but a condensed version was re-released in early 2012 for the iPad.
Located on the planet of Tatooine, pod racing is the biggest sport around. Local junk dealer Watto, has purchased a large number of new pit droids and now it’s your job to make sure all the droids get from the transport ship to the Podrace Arena. Each individual puzzle will have two things, a droid launcher and a pit that serves as the “finish line.” When launched, the mindless pit droids will walk in just a straight line from the launcher till they run into an obstacle.
At different points along the path you must place down directional arrows that alter the course the droids will walk, leading them right into the end pit. The more levels you play the more challenges that you will face, from two launchers to different colored droids. To me that’s when the game becomes the most fun, having to find paths for all different colored droids to there matching end color pits.
This game was made by Lucas Learning, a subsidiary of LucasArts and is intended for younger children. I decided I should see how this game was received by its target audience. Using my nephew we sat down to play. Watching him try out different routes for the droids to take and figure out how to solve the puzzles was enjoyable. You could see the excitement on his face when he beat levels, especially the ones he struggled on. Pit Droids was a lot of fun for him, and at the same time it was testing his mental and visual skills.
As an adult, later levels became a challenge to even me. One very nice thing about this game is your not rushed by a clock. In edit mode you can take as much time as you need to place the directional arrows. Once you believe you have the correct solution, press play and see if all the droids make it to the end. A game like this proves Star Wars can make fun and interesting games without flashy lightsabers or space battles.
