Jedi News Comic Review: Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows #4

On the planet Ostor, the Galactic Empire led an attack against a group of remnant Separatists. Not on the battlefield himself, Darth Vader was unable to prevent Imperial forces from being lured into a trap.

Commander Hock Malsuum, a former clone trooper looking to gain the respect of Vader as a fellow warrior and hater of Jedi, lied to Emperor Palpatine to cover Vader’s failure.

Ordered by the Emperor to have a more hand-on approach in the next attack, Vader plans to hit the Separatists from the ground and also the air, with Hock flying a starfighter on Vader’s wing.

    The Review

In this issue of Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows we will be following some awesome air action from Darth Vader and his newly appointed wing man Commander Hock Malsuum. We’ll also be introduced to some leading characters on the opposing side and new enemies that spark up an anger in Malsuum. We also get an exclusive look at Darth Vader’s black Jedi star fighter and some modified ARC-170’s which look very similar to those from the ongoing The Star Wars series.

A noted point is the background colours of nearly every outside shot. These colours being Red and Orange. At first the reader may think that these colours have been used just for the fact that the world’s surface is made up of dust and sand but it has a deeper meaning. It reflects the bloodshed and anger filled within the citizens. Or the constant red mist of blood as soldiers from either side fall. Again this issue also reveals that the Empire may be powerful but they are clumsy, officers are blinded by their own thought of triumph and are incredibly power hungry which was shown perfectly last issue.

On a different note the artist work is incredible. The emotions of characters are portrayed superbly and it’s almost like you’re watching it as a film. Illustrations are sharp and colour has been applied well. There aren’t any key problems but the only thing I could mention would be that some land sculptures seem slightly unrealistic, but hey, it is the Star Wars galaxy! Overall it’s a great issue with balanced action and dialogue leaving the reader wanting more!
