Duel of the dark side! Suspecting that Mother Talzin had come out of hiding to aid her son Darth Maul, Count Dooku and General Grievous unleashed a full-scale assault against Maul’s criminal syndicate on Ord Mantell.
Anticipating the attack, Talzin sent Maul a detachment of Nightbrothers, elite warriors from Dathomir, and devised a plan which ended in the capture of both Dooku and Grievous.
Now having won a major victory against his enemies, Maul advances his plan for the final destruction of his former master, Darth Sidious…
Writer Jeremy Barlow, penciller Juan Frigeri, Inker Mauro Vargas, colourist Wes Dzioba, letter Michael Heisler and cover artist Chris Scalf bring us the third issue of Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir.
The Review
“To betray the Dark Lord is folly”
The third installment of the epic Son of Dathomir series does not disappoint with dialogue or character revelations. Maul is in control with Dooku and Grievous at his mercy, and Sidious on the receiving end of his gloating. Maul is a calculating and intelligent creature, and seeks to recruit Dooku to his cause, yet has no use for a “monstrosity” like Grievous. Will that be his downfall?
The artwork in this issue is once again a mixed bag. The lightsabers are a sloppy, garish mess and the battle sequences and far off shots are lazy and blurry. Yet, in sharp contrast, some of the art depicting Grievous is detailed and brilliant!
The highlights were seeing Maul and Dooku working together, and Maul’s asteroid base that is most likely a re-hash of the base that Maul was set to have In the cancelled Darth Maul game, integrating him with members of the EU’s One Sith.
The comic, however, had its thorns. I felt it had an inconsistent flow that had too many climactic peaks and valleys. The duel between Maul, Dooku and the “elite Jedi strike team” was as quick and unmemorable as the first Maul/Grievous matchup, and it’s almost like it was written to excite fanboys and then to unceremoniously tease them with an anticlimactic episode. Everything is going to come down to the final issue, and I feel it might be a bit of a disappointment…
