Some historic news to pass along as it has been revealed via Ava DuVernay’s Twitter account that Victoria Mahoney will be joining the production of J.J. Abrams’ 2019 currently-untitled Episode IX as second unit director. Mahoney’s attachment to the final installment in the Skywalker episodic saga marks the first time a female will be featured behind the camera for a theatrical Star Wars film.
Mahoney shortly afterwards confirmed this news with her own tweet.
Time will tell if this hiring is the impetus to us having a female hired by Lucasfilm as the primary director for a future film set in the GFFA.
Congratulations to Mahoney for this significant achievement!

Catt's outta the bag. Thank you @ava for putting my name in the #StarWars #LucasFilm hat. Thank you #JJAbrams for inviting me on your ferocious ride. *This one's for the outliers, dreaming big–in small corners of the Earth.
