Yesterday will be a day long remembered, for all the wrong reasons — the last 12 open Toys ‘R’ Us UK stores closed their doors for the final time, and all remaining staff were let go.
Toys ‘R’ Us’ joint administrator Simon Thomas said: “We are working closely with the 2000 employees affected by the closures to ensure they receive the support they need for redundancy and other compensatory payments.”
It’s the end of an era for the UK branch of the business, with the US stores not too far behind closure. Whilst some other countries operations have been purchased there’s no buyer for the UK, marking an end of the Toys ‘R’ Us name in the UK. It will be interesting to see how other retailers pick up the void left by Toys ‘R’ Us, especially as we approach the summer and then the lucrative holiday season.
