Why It’s Surprisingly Hard to Preserve A Star Wars Stormtrooper Suit

Derek Blasberg over at Vanity Fair takes a look at the latest Star Wars costume exhibition to open, this time on Times Square in New York.

I must confess I’m not the biggest fan of Star Wars, but I was obsessed with this show.

Drake: That’s because George is so good at mixing and layering costume and mythology and design—and then moving it all into a space story. You realize it’s not just science fiction and that the movies are about much more than that.

French: And don’t worry, we know that the show speaks to a lot of people who aren’t necessarily super-fans. When we design any exhibition, we like to be for ages 8 to 80. There’s an educational narrative in addition to the idea of, “Here’s a bunch of stuff from the movies to geek out on!” We want someone who’s never seen a movie to still learn a lot, and think this is really entertaining. And then we want them to go and watch the movies if they haven’t! Ha! But, to be honest, one reason we don’t design to the super-fans is because they’re our most critical. They have so much at stake in the Stars Wars world.
