Sphero BB-8 Controlled By The Mind

IBM have demonstrated their mind control technology to Sky News, Swipe programme by demonstrating how it can be used to control one of Sphero’s BB-8 toys.

Many Star Wars fans have probably dreamt about being able to use the Force.

The ability to control objects with your mind seems far-fetched, but a developer at IBM has created a system that does just that.

This week the Swipe team visited IBM’s research labs in Hampshire, where they tried out an Internet of Things project that allows a user wearing a headset to control a toy BB-8 droid.

“Ever since being a little kid I’ve always wanted to be able to use the Force,” said Joshua Carr, a lead engineer at IBM.

“Getting my hands on the headset and owning a BB-8 gave me the opportunity to live a boyhood dream.”

Mr Carr achieved this by combining an Emotiv Insight headset that reads brain waves with IBM’s Bluemix cloud computing platform.

The droid and the headset are linked via Bluetooth and the software turns the user’s brain waves into commands for the droid.
