Disney Shows Off Real Star Wars Lightsaber During Virtual Disney Parks Presentation

At the end of yesterday’s Disney Parks virtual event, hosted by Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, Josh D’Amaro, he pulled out a lightsaber hilt, turned it on and as the blade rose up, he cheekily added, “It’s real.”

As the presentation was winding down, D’Amaro appeared in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland park, teasing viewers that more is to come from the Disney Parks and said that fans “never know” what they’ll come up with next, before showing something that we all didn’t see coming: D’Amaro pulled out a lightsaber emitter, similar to those you would purchase from Galaxy’s Edge, turned it on, and a true-to-life, just-like-the-movies lightsaber blade rose up — before cheekily adding, “It’s real.”

Attendees were not allowed to take any recordings or screenshots of the presentation, so we’re unable to show you exactly what we saw. The best way to describe it is to think of how the lightsabers look and work in the “Star Wars” films, and, somehow, it looks 1:1.

Disney previously filed a patent for a “Sword device with retractable, internally illuminated blade” in 2017, and this seems to be our first real glimpse at that technology in action. The portion of the video in which the lightsaber was demonstrated went by quickly, so it is difficult to say just what it’s made of or how exactly it works.

We do not know where or when we will see this technology being used in the parks, but we guess it will have something to do with the upcoming Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World, opening sometime this year. More on the opening and this exciting technology as soon as we get it!
