Nick Gillard’s LA Lightsabre Master Class

Friend of the site Nick Gillard has dropped us a line to let us know more about his upcoming Lightsabre Master Classes, taking place over in the City of Angels next January. Over to Nick.

For detailed information, read on after the break.

Star Wars stunt coordinator and sword master Nick Gillard will teach a light saber master class at Tim Weske’s Swordplay L.A. on the weekend of January 21st and 22nd 2012. Mr. Gillard will be assisted by CC Weske. You will have the opportunity to learn lightsabre fighting from the man who created it for Star Wars I, II and III.

In this master class Mr. Gillard will teach a complicated run from Revenge Of The Sith which covers all of the Jedi moves while explaining the rules involving Jedi fighting. This Master Class will be two hours long and will involve Q&A as well as pictures and autographs with the master. This premiere master class will be run in the same way that Mr. Gillard taught Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen for the Star Wars movies.

articipants should come in comfortable attire that you can move in. While you can participate in costume you WILL work up a sweat in this class, so seat/training pants are recommended. Participants should also bring their own training light sabers. Commercially made replicas are often too fragile and have too many knobs on the hilt. The hilt needs to be smooth due to the amount of movement in the hand. Shinai’s are recommended by Mr. Gillard, failing that blunted ski poles with the basket removed will do and yours should be chosen the same way you do for skiing (i.e. grip it upside down above the basket, and put the handle on the floor, if the forearm is level that’s the correct size). Even a bamboo with a gaffer tape handle will do.

Registration for this master class is open, but space is limited in each class.

There will be two locations where master classes are held:

  • Saturday January 21st. 2012 The Granada Pavilion, 11128 Balboa Blvd., Granada Hills, CA, 91344
  • Class times for Saturday: 10:30 am-12:30, 12:45 pm- 2:45, 4:00 pm- 6:00
  • Sunday January 22nd 2012 Swordplay Fencing Studio, 64 East Magnolia Blvd., Burbank, CA, 91502
  • Class times for Sunday: 10:00 am-12.00, 12:15 pm- 2:15*, 3:30 pm- 5:30, 5:45 pm- 7:45**

(*)This class will be a children’s class. This is the first time ever that this type of class has been offered by Mr. Gillard. Ages from 10-16 may attend.

(**)This is your chance to have a private session with Nick. This time slot will be open to bidding, be auctioned off to the highest bidder and can cater from 1 to 20 people. Included in this session will be dinner with Nick and a chance to hear the inside stories behind the making of Star Wars as only Nick can tell them. Bidding will be only by e-mail. Bidding closes at 10pm pacific standard time on Saturday the 14th of January. 50% non refundable deposit will be required from the highest bidder by 10:15 Pacific standard time on the 14th, you will be asked to pay the balance at the door. For reservations and for questions please go to www.swordplayla.com.

A great gift idea for the Star Wars fan who has everything except the experience.

No video cameras or recording devises will be permitted in any of the classes.
