Warwick Davis Asks People to Show Greater Acceptance to Those Who are Different

At last night’s Pride of Britain awards, Warwick Davis responded to criticism directed at the upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation, calling on people to show greater acceptance toward those who are “different in this world”.

The 56-year-old actor returns to his role as Hogwarts’ charms professor Filius Flitwick for the upcoming HBO series based on the fantasy books by JK Rowling.

The new television project has divided fans of the franchise, sparking debate over the author’s public views on gender identity.

Rowling, an executive producer on the series, has previously stated that she considers biological sex to be “real” and “immutable”, while describing self-declared gender identity as “quasi-religious” and “anti-science”.

She has rejected accusations of transphobia, having previously noted that she respects “every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them”.

Speaking on the red carpet at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain awards, Davis told the Press Association: “I’m not really privy to a lot of the backlash.

“I will just say though, I’m a person of difference but it would be nice if everyone could accept people who are different in this world for who they are, not for what they are.”

The author’s outspoken stance has triggered a wave of protests and boycotts from transgender rights activists, targeting events and locations associated with the franchise.

Davis praised the cast and crew involved in the upcoming series as they prepare to retell what he termed a “great story”.

“It’s a fantastic team,” he said. “The very best of the best working on this series. They’re absolutely fantastic. Love it.”

The actor previously starred in the film series alongside Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint across a 10-year span.

Highlighting the importance of the Pride of Britain ceremony, Davis said it offers a “signal” encouraging individuals not to be “one of millions” and to support those around them.

He said: “I always appreciate the invitation. It’s a chance for me to, in my small way, say thank you to people who have done great things for the community, for other people in selfless ways.

“I think it sends up a signal to other people saying don’t just be one of millions. Stand up and be counted and do something good, not just because someone asked you, because you want to and you think it’ll do good.”

The Pride of Britain Awards ceremony will air on ITV1 at 8pm on Thursday, 22nd October.
