Bob Iger: Multiple New ‘Star Wars’ TV Series In The Works

In addition to the new series of films that will be written and produced by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, today saw the announcement of more than one new Star Wars TV series currently being planned by Lucasfilm. Disney CEO Bob Iger stated as such during an earnings call that took place on Tuesday.

The new series are slated to be released via Disney’s upcoming streaming service which is projected to go live sometime in 2019.

“We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct to consumer app. We’ve mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the interties that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn’t completely closed, we can’t be specific about that,” he said during an earnings call Tuesday. “I think you’ll find the level of talent … on the television front will be rather significant as well.”

We already know Disney XD’s Star Wars Rebels animated series will be coming to an end this year with the rest of Season 4 and that a live-action series has already been announced for the streaming service. And rumor has it the Lucasfilm Animation team will be devoting their resources towards creating a new animated series set in the Sequel Trilogy timeline. So with this latest news, Star Wars is set to have quite an impressive footprint as we head into the future not just on the big screen but smaller screens as well.
