Box Office: Can ‘Infinity War’ Beat ‘The Force Awakens’?

As Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War opens in cinemas around the globe today one question keeps getting asked — and we’re not referring to the plot — will it beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the biggest opening in the US, surpassing the $248 million Episode VII took in December 2015?

With the stellar performance of Marvel’s Black Panther, that will probably go on to surpass the worldwide take of The Last Jedi, it wouldn’t surprise too many people if Infinity War did beat The Force Awakens this weekend. The Avengers opened with $207.4 million, whilst Age of Ultron managed $191.3 million, and most recently Black Panther opened with $202 million. Variety.com and others are predicting a $225 million opening (that would be $5 million more than the opening of The Last Jedi), but coming directly off Black Panther which has surprised many at the box office, it’s shaping up to be an interesting weekend!

One thing’s for certain though, Disney are having an amazing run at the box office and there’s plenty more to come from them this year including Solo: A Star Wars Story in just 4 weeks time!
