During an interview session conducted with Variety ahead of the premiere of his new documentary Muppet Guys Talking: Secrets Behind the Show the Whole World Watched at SXSW, Frank Oz was asked about the earlier reports of him returning to voice Yoda in director Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. Here is his response to that question:
There are reports that you might reprise Yoda in the new “Star Wars.”
I feel like I’m a prisoner at war here, and I can only give you my name, rank and serial number. To be true to the people who asked me, and they are kind of my family, I have to say I’ve been asked not to talk about it. I love Yoda. I would be happy to talk to you about it at the time they let me.
We already know Oz worked on a cameo for Yoda in The Force Awakens, which was eventually dropped from the final film. Could this indicate Yoda’s cameo has been pushed back to Episode VIII? Very interesting indeed, especially the part about Oz being asked not to talk about it.
