PRINCESS LEIA, PART 2
Before the destruction of their ultimate weapon, the evil Galactic Empire forced PRINCESS LEIA ORGANA to watch as they extinguished the only planet she’s ever called home. However, the time for mourning is over.
With her only companion, EVAAN, as well as the ever faithful R2-D2 by her side, Leia has left the protection of the Rebel Alliance to persue a more personal mission to protect what’s left of her culture and home planet, Alderaan.
The rumors that the Empire is hunting every last Aldreaanian for repsisals against the Alliance’s actions have sparked a fire within the Princess. Despite the overwhelming bounty on Leia’s head, she has taken it upon herself to travel the galaxy to save what citizens remain….
The Precis
After having to watch her whole life being blown up in front her own eyes by the evil Galactic Empire, the heir to the throne of Alderaan, Princess Leia, decided to dedicate her life to the Rebel Alliance to seek revenge and bring freedom to the galaxy. After being rescued from the Death Star by Luke Skywalker and Han Solo she was able to plan an attack on the mega weapon after stealing the secret plans of which had been hidden in a nifty astromech.
The plan pulled through and the Alliance had successfully managed to gain a victory against the Empire. Despite the victory she becomes enraged to hear that all remaining Alderaanians are being hunted by the Empire. With a deep fire burning within she devotes herself to saving each and every one of those remaining citizens. She becomes accompanied with an Alderaanian royalist by the name of Evaan who becomes dedicated to Leia’s cause.
But with a big bounty on her head the Alliance won’t let her go without a fight. Luke Skywalker is sent to intercept them but is tricked by Evaan and they escape into hyperspace without a trace. Their co-ordinates are set for Naboo, a risky mission being the home world of the Emperor himself. The Princess has learned of a secret committee of Alderaanians which she looks to help rescue, but will the close friends she once knew be close enough to trust?
The Review
This issue really sees the return of the Rebellious Princess that everyone knows too well. Last issue the sketches didn’t quite make it up to the Princess’ standards and her behaviour was just a little off. But this time her wit and looks are strong. While portraying her usual courageous role the reader also gets a look at her more emotional side which is hardly seen on screen. This is the behaviour I was really hoping Marvel would be able to capture.
There is also well timed flash backs of her past and recent life on Alderaan. Much like Dark Horses’ Rebel Heist mini-series where the reader discovered where she attained her rebellious character. This time though showing more her connections to her parents and the mourning of Alderaan. The scene which really stands out the most to me in this issue is the scene where she is sitting in the spaceship around a cornered bench and a round table, much like the Dejarik table from the Millennium Falcon. She sits there with her hand slumped across the table just as Luke did when he mourned the loss of Ben Kenobi. I find this connection and attention to detail a beautiful connection between the film and characters which also shows that the team working on this series know their stuff.
Another interesting detail to note is the coat that Evaan is seen to wear throughout the issue. A yellow plastic like coat with textured stripes down each arm much like the one Luke wears when receiving the medal for the Battle of Yavin. Coincidence? Another absolutely beautiful scene found within this issue is when Leia stumbles upon a glass painting of Queen Amidala and experiences an illusion. At first this scene didn’t make much sense but it is only now that I write this that I realise that Amidala is Leia’s mother. Another great connection to her past. If this series keeps up this kind of pace with all these incredibly detailed Easter eggs it’s gonna be one damn good ride!
