Jedi News Comic Review: Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi: Force War #1

The Tython system has been plunged into war! With the arrival of the armies of the Rakatan Infinite Empire, it is up to the Je’daii to defend the remaining free worlds of the system.

The Je’daii armies are led by Daegen Lok and the offworlder Xesh, who were both exiles on the dark moon Bogan. When the two escaped custody, it was discovered that Loki’s mad visions of the system under siege were about to come true, and that Xesh’s mastery of the Rakatan technology for creating Forcesabers might be the Je’daii’s only hope against the Infinite Empire.

But can even the Je’daii stand against the Rakjatan shock troops known as Flesh Raiders – mutated versions of the Rakatan themselves, bred only for battle?

    The Review

Force Wars fast-forwarded the plot of the last arc into the future, and we know that the Tython system is not doing well, as the Rakata are infecting it like a plague. Xesh and Deagan Lok are the odd heroes, helping defend Shikaawaka from the Flesh Raiders (Star Wars: The Old Republic link) and we see a fun space battle with, yes, a Red Squadron and a Blue Squadron. Seems, the Rebel Alliance may have unknowingly or knowingly, continued an ancient tradition.

Force Wars have tons of action, and I can’t help feeling the War of the Worlds allusions, with the tripod-looking Rakata Annhilators and classical fantasy with Force Hound mages flying above the battlefield on makeshift “dragons”. There is even a brief jousting scene between a Force Hound and Shae Koda!

Emotional tensions are already bubbling to the surface. Xesh is romantically drawn to Shae and she is uncertain of her feelings; Sek’nos is unsure of his place in the Force and Lok is just happy to be in charge. Everything is set up for a truly fantastic series, plus the inclusion of a great villain. Predor Skal’nas knows that the Rakata’s hold on the Force is tenuous, and views Tython as a religious mecca, and desires for something sacred hidden on Tython…Plus, he’s as mean as Palpatine!
