John Boyega Shares Top Tips For Sleeping Better & Helping Cancer Research

Star Wars actor John Boyega, with the help of The Good Sleep Guide, has shared his top tips to getting a good night’s sleep encouraging DreamLab users to help crunch more cancer research data.

Vodafone Foundation is urging the public to continue downloading DreamLab app that has helped cancer researchers crunch over two million calculations in just two months. The app allows users to donate their smartphone processing power to drastically reduce the time researchers at Imperial College London take to crunch data. These calculations could help to match cancer treatments to genetic profiles.

Star Wars actor John Boyega, with the help of The Good Sleep Guide author Sammy Margo, has shared his top tips to getting a good night’s sleep to encourage DreamLab users to sleep longer and help crunch more cancer research data. In a short video, John shares the tips which include having a cool bedroom, keeping your feet warm and sipping on a warm drink before bed (see full tips in Notes to Editors). You can watch the full video here.

If 100,000 app users slept for an extra 15 minutes, the app will generate approximately 100,000 extra calculations a night, helping Imperial researchers conduct more valuable cancer research. These calculations can help researchers match patients’ genetic profiles to cancer treatments, helping find new combinations of existing drugs and ultimately enabling tailored treatments for patients.

Vodafone UK Chief Executive and Trustee of the Vodafone Foundation, Nick Jeffery, said: “We are calling on the public to download and regularly use the app as they sleep to help the fight against cancer. It is incredible to see the volume of data that has been crunched so far, but we know there’s still a lot more work to do.  We want DreamLab to become part of the daily bedtime routine.”

Dr Kirill Veselkov of Imperial College London’s Department of Surgery & Cancer, said: “We have made great headway with the data so far but we need more citizen scientists to download DreamLab and regularly use the app. We’re looking ahead to using the data to help us find more solutions like this to improve cancer treatment.”

The app is free to access and free to use for Vodafone customers, meaning it does not eat into monthly data allowances. The app can also be used across other networks, with users choosing how much data they wish to donate, or connecting via Wi-Fi.

To download the app please search for DreamLab on the App store for iOS or Play Store for Android — and get some more sleep, all to help Cancer Research!
