Kathleen Kennedy: Star Wars Movies Stepping Back for the Moment

Kathleen Kennedy recently spoke with TheWrap about the future of the Star Wars franchise, and during the conversation she said that the team are keen to “step back and really absorb what George [Lucas] created” before officially started on new movies.

Now that the Skywalker Saga has come to an end, and The Mandalorian is tiding fans over until the next movie inevitably comes along, the Lucasfilm president has revealed that the team are keen to “step back and really absorb what George [Lucas] created” before officially starting work on something else.

“That’s what we’ve been doing, and we’ve been having a great deal of fun doing it, and meeting with lots of different filmmakers and talent,” she recently told The Wrap.

“There’s so many fans out there and so many filmmakers that have been influenced by Star Wars for so long that it’s a fantastic opportunity to get a sense of who wants to be a part of this.”

“Stories have been told within this universe over the last 40-odd years,” she continued. “And there’s now the realization that this is a mythology that actually spans about 25,000 years… When you really start to look at all the different stories that have been told, whether it’s in books and games.”

Disney currently has a number of Star Wars pictures lined up, with one – set to be written and directed by Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi – set to be released in 2025. In the interim though, Kennedy believes that focus should be on the series’ in-depth small screen endeavours.

“The ability to be very character-driven, with extended storytelling and connected storytelling, she added. “I think this space offers us a great opportunity to do that.”
