To celebrate the 100th episode of The Star Wars Show the team produced a limited edition statue featuring the show’s droids, namely Director of Chopperations C1-1OP, the mouse droid CH-33Z and a Gonk droid. At first we all thought it was simply a gag but a few weeks later Gentle Giant actually offered the statue for sale — and it’s limited to only 500 pieces too (get yours quickly)!
Kristin Baver, at the Official Site, goes behind-the-scenes to find out from Tony Sherg how the statue came to be….
Mickey Capoferri, Lucasfilm’s senior director of content and programming, urged Sherg to create something that embodied the spirit of the show and its characters. “It’s something we wanted to do for the 100th episode.” So Sherg’s original concept for the piece was a playful nod to the show’s opening sequence, putting the Lucasfilm Yoda fountain center stage with a giant, dopey grin. He started work on the statuette in February, sketching the trio of droids surrounding Yoda with a clutter of equipment as if they were filming on location. “This is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this and it was so much fun,” says Sherg.
But the Yoda fountain felt too cartoonish. “It was a very caricaturized, squishy version of it,” Sherg says. “It had a giant smiling mouth. I even did one just for fun with sunglasses just ‘cause I thought it was funny.”
The fountain later featured in the actual episode donning a top hat and bow tie. If only Sherg had known sooner, he may have sketched a statuette similarly dressed to the nines. “If I had known, that would have been an amazing statue,” Sherg agrees. There’s always the 200th episode, in which, Sherg jokes, “Everyone wears top hats!”
