It might surprise some people to learn that apparently the stories and plots for episodes 8 and 9 weren’t fully fleshed out when Rian Johnson came on board. Chatting on Twitter, Johnson confirmed that to a fan.

‘No story mapped beyond TFA’. Looks like Johnson had a clear road to tell whatever story he wanted to and then leave the reins for Colin Trevorrow and team to pick up and spin a yarn for Episode IX, which by all accounts starts shooting in January 2018.
