Actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge was recently a guest on The Graham Norton Show along with fellow Solo cast member Emilia Clarke. During her appearance on the show Waller-Bridge revealed that when she was initially auditioning for the standalone film, she was unaware she was being considered for the role of a droid character (L3-37). In fact, Waller-Bridge had no clue what a droid even was at that time.
