With the first release of Star Wars in just twelve cinemas forty years ago, it’s astonishing that a film very few believed in would still be the talk of the industry four decades later, and yet here we are with Star Wars still trending worldwide today. Since 1977, a total of eleven Star Wars films have been released, and each of these have fascinated us in some way. Incidentally, the link incorrectly cites twelve films since it includes the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special – this was not a film – in fact 39 years on we’re still not quite sure what it was, although we did love the introduction to Boba Fett!
If you ask the majority of fans to place these films in some order, this is what most will say, but let us know what you think in the comments and on social media. Here are the top 3 ‘best’ Star Wars films cited by most: –
Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
The Empire Strikes Back has consistently been voted the number 1 movie among all Star Wars films, and for good reasons. This movie surpasses A New Hope as it takes viewers into a wonderful world of mysteries. It gives rise to the Rebel Alliance while showing that freedom fighters are operating slowly on the ideological battle and winning more support for their cause. The film shows the growth of each character. Leia shifts to a military commander from a princess warrior. Han has grown up as the leader of men, which completes his transition after having helped Luke to destroy Death Star in A New Hope. Luke finally starts his transition to become a Jedi, and his scenes with Yoda shows the compelling effect of the mysterious Force. The mysticism and wonder of Star Wars can be felt throughout this film, with its numerous ‘wow’ moments. This film is simply packed with everything from space piloting goose bump moments to a blossoming romance. The Empire Strikes Back is also the epitome of perfection because of the – warning spoiler alert – ‘I’m your father’ revelation.
Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
When it comes to cultural significance, A New Hope is one of the best Star Wars films due to its impact on the entertainment industry in so many ways – story and genius (George Lucas), sound effects (Ben Burtt), visual effects (ILM), visuals (Ralph McQuarrie), music (John Williams) and merchandise. George Lucas’ original movie was a dream come true for many viewers, due to its science-fiction fantasy. What makes this film great is that it’s dramatic and daring aspect, and its construction. The sound effects and visual effects of the movie at that time, was beyond anyone’s expectations.
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
The third prequel of the Star Wars series is packed with a variety of good moments such as Anakin Skywalker being seduced by the Dark Side, the downfall of the Jedi and the lightsaber duels between Darth Vader, Obi-Wan, Palpatine and Yoda. The film starts strongly with Palpatine managing to convince Anakin to kill Count Dooku just because it feels the correct thing for him to do, and it ends with Anakin’s transformation to the Dark Lord of the Sith known as Darth Vader.
