Reviews: Han Solo Adventures

Han Solo Adventures is a free fan-made point-and-click adventure game on the PC, by Stacy Davidson. This style of game was made popular by old LucasArts titles such as Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis and Monkey Island back in the early 90’s. Han Solo Adventures is a work in progress, and in June of 2012 a demo was released online for free by the developer. The game is being created using Adventure Game Studio, which you can read more about here.

Based on the demo the game is already great fun to play; it is short and gives a wonderful glimpse into what’s in store. You instantly feel transported back in time to the golden years of point-and-click adventure games due to the nostalgic pixelated graphics and layout. For fans of previous LucasArts titles from this era, the interface and gameplay systems will most definitely feel familiar. Along with this bold retro art style, the music follows suit and fits the atmosphere well.

You are Han Solo, in the period preceding A New Hope, and you begin the demo next to your crashed ship on Tatooine. It is apparent that you need to set off to explore and see what you can do to get off the planet. There are no voices at present – I’m not sure if they will be added or not – currently it is text based in the vein of Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis. Within the demo you meet some familiar Star Wars characters, exchange witty dialogue and use them to help you along on your travels. Utilizing the traditional point-and-click menu and interface to solve fun puzzles feels satisfying (and often humorous). For example, at one point Han is presented with the task of using a droid disguise to gain access to a Jawa Sandcrawler.

At the end of this 10 minute demo you are greeted with a thank you screen and a link to the website. I am personally really looking forward to seeing the game’s progress after this exciting glimpse and getting a taste of what’s in store. Don’t just take my word for it however, play the demo yourself and follow Han Solo Adventures for news and updates, along with Stacy Davidson’s Twitter.
