‘Rogue One’ Surges Past $600m Worldwide

In a week littered with sadness and loss there is one small pleasure – watching Rogue One chew up the box office worldwide. So far the first standalone has amassed a healthy $615,934,691, with $340,634,691 coming from North America and $275,300,000 in international grosses. Bear in mind that the Christmas break has slowed down the reporting of international figures, so as it stands the total is likely higher.

The $340,634,691 figure puts Rogue One in 7th place for 2016, just ahead of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and just $500,000 behind Zootopia. Indeed, there are only $28 million dollars between Rogue One in 7th place and The Secret Life of Pets in 3rd on $368,341,700 so by Saturday it’s highly likely that Rogue One will have nabbed that position. Then it’s another $12 million to pass the box office total of Revenge of the Sith on $380,270,577 and another $28 million further to Captain America: Civil War in 2nd on $408,084,349. Next target is The Phantom Menace on $431,088,295, currently the second highest grossing Star Wars film in North America (The Force Awakens grossed $936,662,225, surely an unattainable target). A $55 million dollar leap will hurl it past Finding Dory’s total of $486,295,561, the current highest grosser of the year in North America.

After 12 days Rogue One has grossed more in the States than The Dark Knight had during the same time period. After 12 days that had grossed $333million and ran on to a record-breaking $533,345,358 with a further $1 billion internationally. As it stands, Rogue One is looking good to come close to that total, benefitting as it currently is from the holiday period with lots of youngsters attending. Indeed, it’s second Monday and Tuesday improved over its first. Stay tuned as we continue to track its progress into 2017.
