Originally announced during the Disney+ Day presentation in December of 2020, Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron was scheduled for release on December 22nd, 2023. What’s happened since…
Here’a a brief summary of what’s happened since…
- At the reopening of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood on June 24th, 2021, Patty Jenkins spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and gave an update sharing that the script was almost finished and they had started to crew up.
- Roughly five months later, on November 8th, 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the production had been delayed due to Jenkins’ schedule and other commitments.
- The Vanity Fair Star Wars Special in May 2002 still listed the film as in production, and Lucasfilm’s President Kathleen Kennedy reiterated this during interviews at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, but stated a release date was not set, and that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film would be released first.
- In a statement on Twitter on December 15th, 2022, Jenkins stated that the film was still in active development, although she didn’t know if it would happen or not.
- On March 7th, 2023, Variety reported that the film had been shelved, and a month later at Star Wars Celebration Europe, Kennedy said to IGN that the project was still being discussed at Lucasfilm, although it could be transformed into a series.
Whatever the status, it does seem like a missed opportunity and we wish Lucasfilm would not announce projects until the scripts are written and ready for casting.
Would you still like to see this project on the big screen or as a Disney+ series?
