In an article posted on Variety that features his new book My Girls: A Lifetime with Carrie and Debbie (you can purchase the title in several formats from Amazon), Todd Fisher spoke about dealing with the loss of his mother and sister. He goes on to say at the end of the article how he hopes Carrie Fisher/Princess Leia will be making one final appearance in the Star Wars saga with 2019’s currently-untitled Episode IX.
“The Last Jedi” closes with Leia still a vital part of the resistance. Todd Fisher hopes that the character will continue to play a role in the forthcoming “Star Wars: Episode IX,” though he said that Disney, the studio behind the series, hasn’t told the family what Leia’s fate will be in future installments.
“Yoda came back in the last movie, so why not Carrie?” said Todd Fisher. “In the first film, Obi-Wan says that if he dies, he’ll come back stronger than ever. I feel like that’s Carrie. She’ll never disappear entirely.”
A little over a year ago, Lucasfilm received permission from Todd Fisher and Billie Lourd (Carrie’s daughter) to include Carrie in Episode IX in some visual capacity, presumably from unused previously-shot footage that didn’t make the final cut of director Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. Prior to that report, Lucasfilm publicly put to rest any idea of them recreating Fisher’s performance as Leia in Episode IX or any other future Star Wars film via the use of digital technology.
It will be very, very interesting to see how the subject of Carrie Fisher/Princess Leia is addressed by Lucasfilm and director J.J. Abrams in the final Sequel Trilogy film.
