With the next wave of video game consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X) set to arrive in time for this year’s holiday shopping season, EA Motive’s creative director Ian Frazier revealed on Twitter (via GameSpot) that Star Wars: Squadrons will be playable on these new platforms. However, the game (in its current iteration) will not take full advantage of the next-gen hardware components available in the PS5 or Xbox Series X systems. The game will be playable on these next-gen consoles from the jump via backwards compatibility support.
Electronic Arts is not planning on developing an updated release of Squadrons for full next-gen hardware utilization, but the option to do so in the future is not being ruled out at this time.
Asked on Twitter if EA had plans for Star Wars: Squadrons to land on PS5 and Xbox Series X, Ian Frazier, creative director for the game at EA Motive confirmed that a backwards compatibility plan was in motion. “We’re not planning a separate version of the game for the next-gen consoles, but yes, the backwards compatibility should work,” Frazier tweeted.
Star Wars: Squadrons will be released later this fall on October 2 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One (crossplay across all platforms is supported) and offers several pre-order bonuses. For more information and to pre-order your copy, visit the game’s official website.
