We take a closer look at some of the recently released LEGO Harry Potter sets including the new Hogwarts Moments (#76396 & #76397), Hogwarts Hospital Wing (#76398), and Hogwarts Magical Trunk (#76398).
The Hogwarts Moment sets continues with two additional sets featuring the Divination Class (#76396) and Defence Against the Dark Arts Class (#76397). Each book measures 13cm in height and almost 9cm wide.
LEGO Harry Potter: Divination Class (#76396)
The Divination Class includes a bright purple cover alongside the flame yellow orange highlights, featuring the Hogwarts crest surrounded by images associated with Divination including a crescent moon, crystal ball, jewel, teacup, and the Grim.
The Divination classroom looks fabulous with opening, albeit relatively bland, walls on each side, as well as a chair and crockery cabinet attached upside down. A doored cabinet features inside the spine with a carved owl appearing above it.
As you would expect, the set features a new version of Professor Trelawney, based on her appearance in Order of the Phoenix, sporting an elaborate shawl with a metallic gold pattern. We also get new versions of Harry Potter and for the second time only Parvati Patel, both wearing different Gryffindor robes.
LEGO Harry Potter: Defence Against the Dark Arts Class (#76397)
The Defence Against the Dark Arts Class includes a black cover alongside the flame yellow orange highlights, featuring the Hogwarts crest surrounded by images associated with the Dark Arts including crossed wands, a Dark Mark, shield, spider, and a werewolf’s head. The set is based on the fourth book, The Goblet of Fire, and as such features ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody as the teaching professor.
The classroom walls fold out, with a central wall that divides the chamber in half. Furnishings include a book, two desks, two chairs, a blackboard, a large magnifying class and various potions along the wall. A dark grey chest is included to represent where the real Moody is imprisoned, and hides a micro Alastor Moody figure. The black coloured book includes an exclusive printed 1×2 tile featuring the Dark Mark.
The ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody minifigure has dual-moulded legs with updated colours from the version included in the minifigure series. His dual printed head features Alastor Moody on one side and Barty Crouch Jr. on the other. Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom are both new in their interpretation here.
If you ignore the needed reliance of stickers in these two Moment sets, they offer good value whilst including three minifigures in each, as we as offering excellent play features — plus they look fabulous on the book shelf! They are priced at £24.99 | $29.99 | €29.99 each.
LEGO Harry Potter: Hogwarts Hospital Wing (#76398)
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry continues to grow in LEGO form with the addition of the hospital wing for the very first time. The set takes inspiration from the climax of The Prisoner of Azkaban and brings the scene to life accurately.
The hospital wing fits into the new modular Hogwarts Castle system released last year, and the set features white lattice windows which work well. The clock tower can be moved around and reconfigured in numerous ways, creating your own layout. The clock tower looks authentic though, with several gears visible inside, resembling the mechanism presented seen on screen. The ward contains three beds, two bedside tables with ample room for minifigures in-between. Other accessories and furnishings are provided, including a privacy curtain with stickers, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, a Skele-Gro bottle, and a medicine cart that includes numerous potions and a bar of chocolate (good as an antidote to seeing Dementors).
Four minifigures are included in the set, with Madam Pomfrey appearing for the very first time. Whilst the versions of Harry Potter and Hermione Granger also appear in the upcoming The Shrieking Shack & Whomping Willow (#76407) they look great and accurately portray their appearance in the film with their torsos splattered with mud. A unique version of Ron Weasley includes a cast to recreate his injured leg.
This 510 piece set costs £44.99 | $49.99 | 49.99€ and looks good, although I would have preferred a separate clock tower. The Madam Pomfrey and Ron Weasley minifigures make this set, although I do like some of the accessories included. The set also includes two collectible wizard cards.
LEGO Harry Potter: Hogwarts Magical Trunk (#76399)
The Hogwarts Magical Trunk is a unique set that allows you to create your own stories and minifigures using the various provided elements. Whilst the new minifigure parts might draw in adults and collectors, this set is very much geared to a younger audience and features an abundance of stickers.
The resulting trunk can be customised in any number of ways with any of the four house colours. However, if you turn the trunk around it does not look as you would expect from the rear showing stickered panels with furniture printed on. This works well when the trunk is open and used for play, but it is not so good if you want to display the trunk. The instructions include three alternative scenes for the interior — the sorting ceremony, the Great Hall welcoming feast, and the common room, although you can also create your own. Accessories include elements for cabinets, chairs, couches, tables, and more all of which need to be reconfigured for each scene. The trunk measures 6cm high, 17cm wide and 7cm deep (doubling to 14cm when open).
The set includes Professor Minerva who returns from last years Hogwarts Moment: Transfiguration Class (#76382). Additionally, 5 torsos, 11 heads and 17 hairpieces can be used to create a variety of custom Hogwarts students, of which 7 heads and 4 torsos are brand new here.
The 603 piece set costs € £59.99 | $64.99 | 64.99€ and seems expensive for what you get, although you do have the ability to create 5 unique minifigures along with Professor Minerva.
