The Synopsis:

BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT! Following the blockbuster finale of Darth Vader #25, the fan-favorite character begins a new journey in STAR WARS: DOCTOR APHRA #1 – the new ongoing series coming this December! From superstar writer Kieron Gillen (Darth Vader) and fan-favorite artist Kev Walker (Marvel Zombies) comes Marvel’s first ongoing series starring an original character created in the comics! Following her time in the clutches of Darth Vader, Doctor Aphra has barely escaped with her life. If he ever learns of her survival, he’ll hunt her to the ends of the galaxy. But for now, it’s time for a return to what she does best. With the droids 0-0-0 and BT-1 in tow, she’s off in search of rare artifacts from the galactic center to the Outer Rim and everywhere in between. Aphra’s got debts to pay after all. Just as long as she can stay one step ahead of the Empire, some Bounty Hunters and just about everyone else in the galaxy!

The Plot:

The story follows Dr Aphra and her companions after she has evaded Vader’s wrath, she can now get on with her normal day job, archeology, or so she thinks as she owes a load of credits and must evade detection from the Empire.

The story begins on a planet in the Outer Rim what appears to be a human in a nondescript space suit scavenging what look likes an abandoned ship (think Rey on Jakku in the abandoned Star Destroyer). The ship explodes and throws the person, that we discover is a man, clear, only to be somewhat mercilessly blasted in the back by Aphra who stills the Artifact from his dead hand as smoke still billows from his fresh blaster wound.

Aphra returns to her ship where her droid companions 0-0-0 and BT-1 are waiting for her, after gambling on her demise. As they are about to leave the planet, someone comes knocking with a couple of heavies looking for a debt to be settled, its Soo-Tath from the syndicate, looking like a strange mix of Willy Wonka and Flavor Flav!

She stalls long enough for her droid companions to get her Wookie friend Krrsantan from inside the ship who lays the smack down on the good doctor’s foes.

Soo-Tath threatens to grass Aphra up to the Imperials and runs off, but the psycho killer droids Triple Zero and Bee Tee One follow him in not so hot pursuit to a Cantina where Triple Zero injects him with a toxin that will make it looks like he died of heart failure.

Aphra and her companions go to see an artifact dealer to try to get some credits for their new find, but shockingly someone has been playing games behind the scenes and has stolen Aphras doctor status so she can’t trade the artifact. Confused as to who could have done this her attention is drawn to a man who suddenly questions her past morality decisions, she calls him dad. DER-der-dah!!!

To be Continued……..

The Review:

I have high hopes for this series after seeing Aphra develop in the Vader series. In conclusion story wise, this isn’t the strongest start and not much happens, but I’m hoping and thinking it paves the way for more developments in the issues to come. The art overall is good.

So I’m on the fence at the moment and looking forward to seeing what develops.
