The Review

Kanan #12 finishes off the series by diving back into the present and tying up the past. Kanan and Ezra go off to a planet called Moraga to help an old friend. In doing so, Kanan shows Ezra The Escape, they run into Vice Admiral Rae Sloane, and the smuggler Janus Kasmir makes one last appearance. It’s a fitting ending to the series.

Kanan #12 adds Andrea Broccardo to the art team to relieve Pepe Larraz. The change up in artists maintains much of the animated feel of the series. There’s still a lot of bright colors and cartoony looking panels, though it’s a slightly different style. It’s not bad and it gets the job done. While I personally like a more detailed and less cartoonish style in comic artwork, this one does lend itself to the look of the tv show.

The story, on the other hand, is top notch. I wasn’t sure where the series was going to go after issue #11, but it turns out Greg Weisman had one more adventure for Kanan. Leaving the past behind, Kanan and Ezra go on a mission, which funny enough leads right back to Kanan’s past. First he seeks out an old friend which leads to a rescue mission. The rescue leads to an old foe, Rae Sloane, which ties in nicely to the A New Dawn novel by John Jackson Miller. In turn, the story makes a hand off from Rae to the Grand Inquisitor, completing the throughline from A New Dawn to Star Wars Rebels. Beyond that, Janus Kasmir shows up to save Ezra, which completes a fun little circle for the Kanan comic series. Between the tie-ins and connections, the story does a lot of things to not only wrap things up, but to grow the entire universe into a more cohesive story.

As a whole, Kanan was a fun series. It wasn’t the best comic series I’ve read or looked at, but it was enjoyable. Whether you buy it or borrow it, it’s worth checking out.

In the end, I give Kanan #12 a five out of five. It was a fun way to end things and it packed some surprises.
