Short Story Review: Constant Spirit

November/December 2013: Star Wars Insider #145: Constant Spirit
War is hard to stomach and the hardest is for young people. This short story stars a young Princess Leia on a secret reconnaissance mission for her father Bail Organa. The story is all about Leia, and the characters around her are new and uni-dimensional. Yet that works out just fine.

The story is Leia’s coming of age, as she learns that you can’t save everyone, and that the sacrifice of one is sometimes necessary, for the whole to succeed. The Empire is brutal and oppressive, and we can feel the desperation, as the Alliance spy must give himself up to save the others.

When Leia returns, we see a parallel of her and Bail to the talk Luke had with Ben Kenobi’s ghost a few years later. Bail tells Leia that having strong feelings for others is a credit to her character, but must be disregarded in order to win a war. Sacrifice is necessary, and she can’t help everyone. Yet, it doesn’t mean she shouldn’t always try.
