Short Story Review: The End Of History

January 2015 Star Wars Insider #154: The End Of History

This tale begins very abruptly and we are quickly introduced to the main character: Antron, an old man with a very Star Warsy/sci-fi sounding name. He witnesses a crashed starfighter on his homemoon, and is reluctant and apprehensive in approaching it (as anyone would be.) He, however, musters his courage with the thought that if Jedi Master Vonkhel could befriend the Sith Lord of Gairm, then he could do this.

Woah- slow down for a moment. Did he say the Sith Lord of Gairm? The Disney reboot flashed out most of the EU Sith, leaving us with mere crumbs, and now we have another name to add to the list of canon Sith. Will he one day join the ranks of lore alongside Bane, Plagueis, Sidious, Maul, Tyrannus, and Vader. Only time will tell.
Anyway Antron meets Miru, a resistance fighter, who is being hunted by the Empire. Antron is revealed to be a gatekeeper of an archive of Jedi artifacts and knowledge that he doesn’t want the galaxy to forget. In a slightly tedious game of cat and mouse, Antron must make a decision on whether to help a being like his idols: The Jedi or risk losing everything he cares about.

All in all, this is a pretty nice little story, written by the talented former Bioware worker, Alexander Freed. Alexander who wrote One Thousand Levels Down, seems to be in sync with Disney’s new way of doing this. This tale, The End of History does not add anything to greater canon, nor does it take away. I don’t know if this has already been retconed, but Freed name-drops Ossus in connection with the Jedi’s history, and as a rabid Old Republic fan, I could not be happier. Antron is a likeable character, whose knowledge of the Jedi is impressive and very reminiscent of an old school archeologist. Miru is a bit of a wooden character who’s name and face can be indistinguishable to any Rebel character, yet she is the perfect catalyst for Antron’s actions. I don’t know where this story fits into the timeline; yet I do know that is a good start in rebuilding the New EU’s annuals.
