The Star Wars Book from DK, written by Pablo Hildago, Cole Horton and Dan Zehr, finally reveals details on Snoke’s origins. OldManBinks on Twitter shares the page on Snoke which reveals the following….

He is described in the book as “a strandcast – an artificial genetic construct concocted by the resurrected Darth Sidious to be his proxy in power”, with the page also stating that “Snoke has free will, but his actions and goals are still orchestrated by Sidious”.
It is also noted that Sidious uses Snoke to sidestep “the tradition of a dark-side apprentice slaying his master to ascend”, with Kylo’s execution of Snoke not affecting Sidious directly.
These details confirm that Snoke was directly derived from Sidious and used as a front by him to achieve his dark goals, but that he was also his own being with free will and perhaps a lack of full awareness of where he really came from.
The question of whether the Snoke we see on screen is the first of his kind to lead the First Order is still unclear however, as it hasn’t been explained whether the Snoke bodies Kylo sees in the Emperor’s lair have been used or not.
The book also mentions the influence that Snoke had on a young Ben Solo – who later became Kylo Ren – confirming that Snoke played on Ben’s need for “purpose and belonging” to bring him to the dark side.
