Jedi News Comic Review: Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin #5

Following clues that he believed would lead to the culprit behind a recent assassination attempt on Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader arrived on an unknown moon filled with fearsome creatures and home to an ancient temple housing a powerful weapon.

In the temple, Vader found a society of warriors, all believing that the Dark Lord would fulfill their prophecy and guide the galaxy into chaos. Instead, Vader took a crystal that amplified a strange power coming from within the moon, and left the warriors to be consumed by the now-self-destructing moon.

Unknown to Darth Vader, outside the temple a hired assassin is waiting for him, prepared to execute his commission—before the moon obliterates them both…

We conclude the latest Darth Vader mini-series with Scripter Tim Siedell, Penciller Ivan Fernandez, Inker Denis Freitas, Colorist Michael Atiyeh, Letterer Michael Heisler and Cover Artist Ariel Olivetti in charge.

    The Story

When a Star Destroyer was split in two by a mysterious beam protruding from a mystical world Lord Vader was sent to destroy the weapon. The Sith Lord managed to track, find and annihilate the super weapon. After wading his way through hordes of deadly beasts he has successfully destroyed the temple hosting the colossal beam.

He now heads back to his ship. But many more tyrannical beasts stand in his way. While making his way through the various beasts he discovers an Assassin tracking him. The Assassin has no other choice but to finish the mission and kill Darth Vader. How will it all end in this finale issue of ‘Darth Vader and the 9th Assassin’.

    The Review

And we are off with a BOOM as the opening scene is filled with a magnificent explosion, followed by tree swinging scenes and beast showdowns. As always in this series we get a good look at some new awesome beasts causing mass destruction and some cool assassin moves. The background has also been drawn with immense detail which really brings the comic to life followed by good use of onomatopoeia giving you the sounds of the action.

Although, for all he build up from the last four issues where we haven’t been seeing any action between the assassin and Darth, the final outcome really was quite disappointing! The fight between Vader and the assassin was incredibly intense but way to short and way too easy for a Sith Lord. I’m not normally very good at giving bad criticism to comics because I enjoy them so much but I found that Darth Vader dismissed everything with a flick of the hand which makes it boring.

I mean even the fight between the employer and Darth was shown on one page consisting of basically nothing! I think it was a great storyline but they spread it out to much with not enough happening in each issue and didn’t use it to the full potential. Overall though this comic series is filled with plenty of detail, many unseen animals with new concept craft and some cool action moves!
