The Official Site has posted news of a fine looking Star Wars release that is headed our way in the Autumn, one curated by George Lucas himself.
Housed behind a front cover by our recent guest Dave Dorman and a rear cover by Hellboy’s Mike Mignola, the book lifts the lid on over three decades of innovative Star Wars artwork.
Abrams Books, publishers of the enthralling Star Wars Visions art book, is gathering together a new trove of Star Wars art celebrating the comics medium, as curated by George Lucas. It is due out later this year, and features a foreword by Dennis O’Neil and an introduction by Virginia Mecklenburg, Senior Curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Star Wars Art: Comics showcases the best original artwork from the past three decades of Star Wars comic-book publishing — including art by Sergio Aragonés, Terry Austin, David Michael Beck, Bret Blevins, Tim Bradstreet, Howard Chaykin, Dave Cockrum, Terry Dodson, Dave Dorman, Hugh Fleming, Jon Foster, Ian Gibson, Cully Hamner, Hiromoto-SIN-ichi, Adam Hughes, Carmine Infantino, Drew Johnson, Rod Pereira, Kilian Plunkett, P. Craig Russell, Bill Sienkiewicz, Carlos Garzon, and Al Williamson.
These pencil roughs, inked pages, and painted covers are joined by more than twenty all-new, exclusive commissions by comics legends and superstars, such as Arthur Adams, John Cassaday, Amanda Conner, Mike Kaluta, Sam Kieth, Joe Kubert, David Lapham, Mike Mignola, George Pérez, Paul Pope, Frank Quitely, John Romita, Sr., Tim Sale, Jeff Smith, Ryan Sook, Jim Steranko, and J.H. Williams III.
Together, these works celebrate the creativity of Star Wars comics and provide a glimpse at the manifold transformations American sequential art has undergone from the late 1970s to present day.
This book is due out this Fall, followed in November by a Limited Edition of 500 copies, with more artworks and signed prints by Sam Kieth, Dave Dorman, Frank Quitely, Mike Mignola and Ryan Sook.
With the book curated by noted comic fan and former comic shop owner George Lucas, this looks set to be yet another stellar entry into the Star Wars coffee table book club.
