Becca Benjamin nails it with another great article over at the always excellent Cantina Cast.
I remember it, almost like it was yesterday. My mom would style my long blonde hair in Princess Leia buns and send me on my way, chasing after my older boy cousins, in hopes they’d include me in their make-believe Star Wars fun. Of course, if I made a big enough fuss, they were forced to let me ‘play along.’ Once I was clued in on the fun, it wasn’t long until I heard one of them say, “You can’t have a lightsaber. You’re a girl and a girl can’t be a Jedi.”
I wonder what they’d think of that statement now, some three decades later. Perhaps, they’d want to retract it? Not that that matters, so much has changed since then. Society has transposed and gender roles are dissipating. Well, to some extent.
