Alan Tudyk talks to The SDR Show about how his improv as K-2SO on the set of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ended up in the final cut of the film. K-2SO is not in the first season of Andor, starting tomorrow on Disney+, but is expected in the second season.
A new episode of The SDR Show featuring Alan Tudyk will go live on Thursday, September 22nd. In the hour-long interview, Tudyk talks all his voiceover work (including Batman, the Joker and Superman), how to pronounce his name (on the Zoom his name is spelled out phonetically – “Toodick”), how he got to meet Mel Brooks when trying out for the musical Young Frankenstein.
Some highlights of the interview include:
• How much of Star Wars: Rogue One was improvised, including K-2SO slapping Cassian Andor. Diego Luna arrived on set with a welt that had been applied to reflect being hit in an earlier scene—but discovered that the scene had been rewritten. Rather than go back into makeup they decided to add the hit at the last minute. (with Tudyk improvising the line “Fresh one for you if you mouth off again”)
• How during Covid he played the John Cena role for his wife who is the choreographer on James Gunn’s “The Peacemaker”
• That when he first read Dodgeball he thought it was excellent, except for the role of the pirate. His agent suggested he reread to get and learn to love the pirate.
• That other big actors were also up for the pirate role, including Patrick Warburton
• After playing the extremely racist Ben Chapman in the Jackie Robison biopic 42 that Chadwick Boseman (Robison) gave him a big hug
