Star Wars: The Last Jedi crossed the $300m mark yesterday (Friday) in the USA, with estimates putting the Friday take close to $25m, taking the total going into Saturday at around $321m. Compared with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had taken $440m at the same point in 2015, The Last Jedi is trailing by $119m or roughly 27%. If you apply the same percentage drop over the entire run for The Last Jedi, the estimated gross is around $777m in the USA but this is purely a guesstimate at this stage, and its performance this weekend should give us more information, especially from Christmas Day which this year falls on Monday (in 2015 it fell on Friday with a total weekend take of $150).
These figures are from BoxOfficeMojo.com who are reporting an estimated 4-day weekend of around $100, which further suggests that by the end of Monday The Last Jedi will may be close to or have crossed the $400m in the USA. $400m in 11 days is not to be sniffed at, but we’ll revisit the estimates and actual figures early next week.
Adding on the foreign totals (outside of the USA) it’s widely believed that The Last Jedi passed the $600m mark on Thursday or Friday, but remember it’s still to open in China in early January. We should also have an update on the foreign gross towards the middle of next week, including it’s total gross to-date here in the UK.
Where will The Last Jedi finish up gross wise? It will beat last years Rogue One for sure but will fall short of The Force Awakens, finishing around $1.3 – $1.5 billion worldwide. The Last Jedi seems to be the most divisive Star Wars film to-date and if you’ve only seen it once and disliked it, we really do suggest you give it another viewing – there’s is so much to take in that seeing it again may help to put things into perspective.
