Yesterday, Saturday 20th, The Last Jedi crossed the $600 million mark in the USA, becoming only the sixth film to have done so. The number of theaters showing the film dropped by 634 in the USA this weekend, down to 2,456.
It is now ‘only’ $21 million behind Marvel’s Avengers, and based on the performance of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it should have just enough power in it to make that over the coming weeks. Looking at the same point in the trajectory of Rogue One, at this point it had made $510 million and by the end of it’s run it banked a further $22 million. If The Last Jedi follows a similar path it should just eclipse Marvel’s Avengers and finish in the all-time Top 5 in the USA.
The USA box office total accounts for 47% of the total box office take for The Last Jedi. If we extrapolate where it will likely end up in the USA, then we think it will amass a worldwide total of around $1,325 billion — it currently sits at $1,274 billion. This weekend it will surpass Disney’s Frozen to become the 9th biggest film worldwide, but we don’t think it has enough in it to surpass Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 currently in 8th position with $1,341.5 billion, although we’d be happy to be proved wrong.
