Mon Mothma actress Genevieve O’Reilly recently spoke to SFX Magazine about how the upcoming Andor Disney+ series brings ‘thriller’ elements to the Star Wars franchise.
“When we meet Mon Mothma [on] Coruscant, it’s a high society world of intrigue and political machinations,” she said. “She is trying to be a voice for diplomacy and a voice for action, and trying to gather allies against this ever looming autocracy. At the moment, the Emperor has all the numbers, and she is a very lonely voice. In order to change, she has to put her head above the parapet, which is highly dangerous, and I think that’s what allows for the thriller element that runs through this season.”
The Irish-Australian actor previously teased that Andor will show a different side of Mon Mothma herself, as well. Referencing the character’s stately portrayal in previous entries in the Star Wars saga, O’Reilly promised that fans will “learn about the human being — the woman behind the gown” in the upcoming show. She also cited the chance to learn more about Mon Mothma through a long-form narrative as one reason why she returned to the role she last played in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The first three episodes of Andor will stream exclusively on Disney+ on September 21st.
