On Friday Star Wars: The Last Jedi took approximately $19 million in the US (Variety.com), down 23% on last weekend. If that trend follows for Saturday and Sunday it should amass a further $36 million this weekend meaning that at some point during the next 24 hours The Last Jedi will break the $500 million dollar mark in the US — finishing on around $520 million by the end of the weekend. It should also follow a similar path in the rest-of-the-world taking its total worldwide gross beyond $1 billion, only the 32nd film to do so (BoxOfficeMojo.com).
It will also become the top 2017 movie in the US, eclipsing Beauty and the Beast, and on track to surpass Despicable Me 3 to become the #3 movie of 2017 worldwide. The only other films to top $1 billion worldwide in 2017 being Beauty and the Beast, Fate of the Furious and Despicable Me 3.
January 5th 2018 sees The Last Jedi open in China and estimates put it grossing between $75-$105 million suggesting the film should go on to reach the top 10 in terms of worldwide grosses with an expected total between $1.3 – $1.5 billion. It has to go beyond $1,518.8 billion to enter the all-time top 5 and displace the 2012 release of Marvel’s The Avengers — we think it will be tight, and the next couple of weeks and a strong opening in China should give us a good indication. More analysis to come as we watch the box office totals closely.
