‘The Last Jedi’ Stumbles In China, Hits $1.2 Billion Worldwide

It looks as though The Last Jedi has stumbled in China with a lacklustre opening weekend with ‘just’ $28.7, marking a disappointment for the Disney/Lucasfilm movie. Nevertheless, this number has helped push The Last Jedi over the $1.2 Billion mark worldwide, and into 13th place on the all-time worldwide chart (as we predicted last week), but it’s less than was hoped for by Disney.

Based on the total take in China this weekend, lower than the $30 million achieved during the first weekend by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we think The Last Jedi will be hard pushed to reach $65 million in China, that’s less that the total achieved by Rogue One.

By the end of next weekend we would have hoped that The Last Jedi would overtake Beauty and the Beast, currently in 10th spot in the all-time worldwide chart, with a take north of $1,263.5 billion but with bigger than expected box office falls it may take longer — The Last Jedi currently stands at $1,205.2 billion worldwide.

With the poorer than expected results in China we estimate a total worldwide box office gross of around $1.3 – 1.35 billion; down around 35% on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It should be noted that these figures are similar to the decline in the other second films in the Star Wars trilogies — The Empire Strikes Back and Attack of The Clones.
