Rogue One is set to break through the billion dollar mark worldwide, becoming only the 3rd Star Wars movie to do so and the 28th movie to break that iconic barrier. Sitting in 28th place on $987,188,185, the movie has amassed $504,221,149 in the States – only the 7th film to break $500 million.
With estimates having the film pull in $8.5 million in the States this coming weekend it could find itself on Monday with $514 million in the bank in North America. That, plus international grosses and the addition of late arriving figures such as China, which updates weekly, will take it past the billion.
That puts it in rarefied atmosphere right behind 2008’s The Dark Knight on $1,004,558,444, a figure it could overtake this weekend. The Bat is also the next target on the domestic list on $534,858,444. Passing that figure may still be a few of weeks away and unless something miraculous happens it will be the final movie it overhauls. In 5th position is Marvel’s Avengers Assemble on $623,357,910, well over $100 million ahead.
On the worldwide list Rogue One could still have some mileage. $80 million separates The Dark Knight in 27th on $1,004,558,444 and The Dark Knight Rises in 17th on $1,084,939,099. Another couple of months should take it past the 3rd in the Nolan Bat trilogy and remember, come December 2017 there’s every chance that Episode VIII will enter the top ten in the States and in the process edge A New Hope out of the top 10.
