Talking to Radio Andy on SiriusXM, director Ron Howard has confirmed that there are no current plans for a sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story. When asked about a sequel to Willow, Howard discussed the two hour story meeting held the night before and how the film is in ‘active development’.
The filmmaker did note the excitement he feels at the film earning a following among fans now that the pressure to deliver a major financial earner has subsided, though it would seem there is little hope for seeing Solo return to the big screen for more adventures.
“Well, there’s no sequel planned now and it’s amazing to be a part of a Star Wars movie that seems to be a kind of underground hit, which is not what you’d expect, but that’s been an odd, strange journey for that movie,” Howard revealed to Radio Andy on SiriusXM.
The host asked Howard about the number of projects that have sprung up around established entities, and Willow would definitely fit the bill. Earlier this year, he gave an update on the project and fans are wondering what the director could be cooking up on Disney+. He, like most people awaiting the project just wants the fans to have something awesome provided the space that the company has allowed them. From the sounds of things, development is already underway, and that can only be a good thing to hear for people starving for details.
“I was in a two-hour story meeting last night,” Howard began. “The writer, Jon Kasdan is leading the charge. They have a great group of writers and it’s in very active development. The scripts are going great. So, they have to get through the season and the budget. And so forth, there’s no green light there yet, but I’m very optimistic about it. I love his take on it.”
Perhaps Howard is not involved in the Solo sequel, or maybe the interviewer just did not ask the right questions; wonder how Howard would have responded when asked about a Disney+ Solo series? Based on the comments made, it would seem we may have to be satisfied with JUST a Willow sequel.
