Review

We took the decision to take a look at a couple of the new DOTS sets released from LEGO in March 2020. Although these sets are geared from age 6+, my 11 year daughter Miriam found them fun to build and play with. The packaging for both features a moulded plastic tray with compartments to hold the LEGO pieces in place, and is ideal for sorting as you build. Each tray comes with a clear lid that snaps to the base. These don’t stack too well but are great for the elements provided and Miriam has been using these for other LEGO storage/sorting.

Inside the Box

These are both priced at £12.99/$14.99 although the Picture Holders contains almost 100% more pieces than the Jewellery Stand. All the pieces come in clear plastic bags which can be opened and sorted using the compartments in the moulded trays provided. The instructions are printed on a fold-out poster and leave you to decorate the holders or stands in any way you want.

The Build

The instructions just tell you how to build each box or holder, which are built in a similar way to a BrickHeadz model. From there you are on your own to decorate each model in any way you want using any of the supplied DOTS.

Overall

DOTS is a new theme from LEGO introduced earlier this year, and it is understood that the theme has been in production for a while; if you watch The LEGO Movie 2 carefully you can see some of the DOTS products featured in the real-life segment of the film. LEGO have taken small 1×1 square and round bricks/studs/plates and created a new theme out of existing elements. I guess we have to give them credit for doing so and positioning the theme at young girls, giving them a great way into the brand that is perceived by some as boys only — Friends theme anyone?

The disparity in the number of pieces between the two sets, 413 vs 213, can be explained by the sheer number of larger elements found in the Jewellery Stand, as opposed to the many small elements in the Picture Holders.

Jewellery Stand: –

Both builds are fun and exhibit lots of bright eye cathching colours and they work well in what they were set out to achieve, although the Picture Holders can be a bit too fiddly. Also, the new element used to hold the picture in can leave a mark on your photos, so be careful what you choose to go in them. There are also lots of DOTS left behind after you have decorated your creations, allowing you to change the pattern whenever you wish.

Don’t just take my word for it, we asked Miriam to write up what she thought of the new theme and the two products: –

I think the new DOTS theme is very colourful and imaginative bringing new use to existing LEGO parts. I like the new collectible series of DOTS although it is difficult to get them all from the blind bags.

I liked building the picture holders, they were an easy build and I like putting my own mark on them. The jewellery stand was also a good build, but I preferred the cuteness of the picture holders, looking like small animals.

I would definitely recommend the DOTS theme to my friends.
