The latest book from Pablo Hidalgo, Star Wars: Fascinating Facts out now in the US and later in the year in the UK, reveals some interesting facts about The Skywalker Saga including the fact that George Lucas planned on killing Luke in his version of Episode VIII. One way or another, it seems that Luke would have died in the middle episode of the sequel trilogy.
