My latest Star Wars-focused article over at The Metro takes a look at the stand alone movies and why they are so important to the future of the franchise.
George Lucas often spoke of a trilogy of trilogies, with notes made on the third trilogy going as far back as the 70s.
If the episodic saga episodes are coming to a close in 2019, and no more saga entries are announced, that puts a huge importance on the standalone movies.
Perhaps Lucasfilm are adhering to those initial notes from Lucas, leaving the episodic productions as a block of stories deeply influenced by the original ideas Lucas had back in the 70’s.
The current sequel trilogy owes a deep debt to Lucas, who gave treatments for the trilogy to Disney when the sale of Lucasfilm took place.
And while J.J. Abrams, Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow have clearly diverted away from those initial notes, the DNA of the Maker is there.
That leaves us with the standalones.
