‘The Last Jedi – DJ’ #1 Comic Writer On Creating DJ’s Backstory

It was announced last week that Marvel will be releasing a special one-shot comic focusing on Benicio Del Toro’s character DJ from The Last Jedi. Titled Star Wars: The Last Jedi – DJ #1 and slated to arrive on January 31, the comic aims to provide readers with a closer look at who DJ is and what makes him tick.

The only info we know at the moment about Del Toro’s DJ came our way via an article posted by Entertainment Weekly and writing on a Funko POP! Vinyl figure.

Co-writer Ben Blacker recently spoke with Lucasfilm’s dandy Dan Brooks over on StarWars.com about this upcoming release. The comic will show us what DJ was up to right before viewers see him in The Last Jedi, acting as sort of character prequel if you will. Check out the intro below and then take the source link for the full interview in which Blacker refers to DJ as being “crafty” and “more than a bit mercenary.”

In a surprise announcement last week, Marvel revealed Star Wars: The Last Jedi — DJ #1, a special one-shot written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker (Star Wars: Storms of Crait) and illustrated by Kev Walker (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra). The comic is set for release on January 31, 2018, and will follow the mysterious new scoundrel DJ, played by Benicio Del Toro in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. All we know so far is that the story is set prior to the events of the film, and a still from the movie was unveiled as a variant cover. Being StarWars.com, we wanted to know more — so we fired off some quick questions over e-mail to co-writer Ben Blacker.
