The review;
I have long admired the products available from Orbitkey and my interest was further raised when they publicised their collaboration with the Star Wars brand. My interest was elevated even further when they announced the Star Wars Orbitkey Desk Mat Obi-Wan Kenobi and Star Wars Orbitkey Desk Mat Darth Vader. Now, I think most people know of my personal affinity with the Jedi Master, so it was no surprise which one I would choose and that it became a must have item for my desk at home. My home office is also my collection display room, so a Star Wars themed desk mat fits in perfectly.
First impressions on delivery were that Orbitkey want to ensure that the item you ordered arrives in good order. The outer shipping box is very sturdy and with the slogans of “Let’s get organised” and “Organisation starts here” on the outside to whet your appetite.
When the main packaging box is removed from the shipper, you get a tease of what is inside with a cutaway exposing a section of the mat for a tactile preview. The packaging itself is also very sturdy.
The mat itself is tightly wrapped in in tissue paper to hold it coiled in the box. The tape proved hard to split so tearing the paper was the best option. Now, at this point the mat is not in a shape for you to use immediately. It is curled and does need some manipulation and time for it to go completely flat. Orbitkey advise this can take up to 72 hours, but in my case, it was a couple of weeks before it lay completely flat on my desk.
A nice touch at unboxing is finding the Obi-Wan Kenobi collectible character card. The artwork is awesome, but the blurb on the back gives you details about your desk mat.
Once your mat is ready to use, you then notice the accenting and details, which are minimal, but superb. The Republic Crest is embossed into the vegan leather upper in the bottom right-hand corner. The upper is also a beautiful match for Kenobi’s robe. Then there is the mats felt base in the contrasting colours of Kenobi’s tunic and trousers. There is a flash of blue in the tag with Kenobi in Aurebesh and “Hello there”, with a further flash colour mimicking Kenobi’s blue blade in the organising tray.
The organising tray across the top is perfect for pens, USB memory sticks and alike, but the magnetic cable holder is superb. It bonds strongly with the tray area and takes some moving once in place. It would have been nice to have two of them in the box, but you can purchase additional ones for £10 each.
As a product, you can see Orbitkey are aiming high with their quality. The price point is also relatively high, starting at £84.90 for the medium and rising to £99 for the large isn’t in everyone’s price range, but that is also a side issue of being linked to a major franchise.
As desk mats go, it is of excellent quality. The time it takes for it to flatten was slightly frustrating, but during use, it has made my desk more functional and comfortable to use. It is a practical solution, especially home working. The gap between the upper and lower layers is designed to store important paperwork. While you won’t get a large amount in there, it will help clear unwanted paper to free up more of your desk space.
I would recommend this to any Star Wars fan, especially those who look up to Obi-Wan Kenobi like me. In saying that, you will have to move quickly as the medium sized mat has already sold out, leaving only the large mat available.
